A parking payment kiosk works by having you input your license plate number, select your desired parking time, and pay with a card or mobile payment. The system then automatically records your vehicle's parking permission, so you don't need a paper ticket on your dash.
What Is a Parking Payment Kiosk and Where Is It Used?
A parking payment kiosk is an automated machine for paying parking fees. You can find them in parking lots, garages, and on city streets, where they replace manual cashiers.
How Does the User Interact with the Kiosk?
You start by touching the screen, then enter your license plate number. After that, you choose how long you need to park, check the fee, and complete the payment.
1. Enter your license plate. This links the payment to your car.
3. Confirm the fee on the screen.
5. Get your receipt. In modern "Pay-by-Plate" systems, your plate is your permit, so you don't need to display the ticket.
I always include flexible payment options in my designs. These kiosks are equipped just like a retail checkout. They have built-in NFC readers for fast tap-to-pay with cards or mobile wallets like Apple Pay. For older cards, there are still chip and swipe readers. While less common now, some kiosks also have mechanisms for bills and coins to ensure everyone can pay easily.
This backend system is the real magic. The moment you pay, the kiosk sends your license plate number and paid time to a central cloud database over a 4G or Wi-Fi network. Enforcement officers use a handheld device to scan license plates. Their device checks the database in real-time to confirm a valid payment. This smart, connected system is what makes the whole process so efficient and accurate.
